Automotive Certification:
Anyone interested in becoming a dealer or salesperson in Ontario must complete and pass the automotive certification course offered through Georgian College.
This course is intended to promote more professionalism in the Ontario automotive retail industry and to provide better protection for customers. It’s the first mandatory automotive certification program of its kind in Canada and covers the laws, regulations and practices governing the purchase, sale and lease of motor vehicles in Ontario.

Report curbsiders!
All motor vehicle dealers in Ontario must be registered with OMVIC. To report illegal car sales call the curbsider hotline: 1-888-NOCURBS (662-8727) or email OMVIC. And remember, if you are buying privately make sure you do your homework and avoid becoming a curbsider's victim. Obtain a UVIP and get an unbiased opinion from a mechanic you trust.

CONSUMER PROTECTION

Has your lemon left you feeling a little sour?
Despite what you may have heard there are no lemon laws in Ontario. In its place we have the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP) which can help you if you think you've bought a lemon. CAMVAP is an "arbitration" program that aims to resolve disputes with automobile manufacturers about the quality of your vehicle or how the manufacturer is interpreting or implementing its new vehicle warranty. Most domestic and imported passenger cars, light trucks, sport utility vehicles, vans and multi-purpose passenger vehicles that are purchased or leased in Canada are covered by CAMVAP. The vehicle, however, must be from the current or previous four (4) model years. Keep in mind that arbitration outcomes are final and participants waive their right to subsequent civil action. Contact CAMVAP at 1-800-207-0685 or online at camvap.ca for more information.

HAVE YOU HEARD?

Road trip trivia
Looking for a few fun facts to keep your backseat drivers entertained en route to cottage country? Share a couple of these world records. Or, better yet, try to break them! The record for the longest road trip belongs to Emil and Liliana Schmid who’ve travelled in excess of 577,500 km since October 16, 1984, covering 144 countries and territories in the process. The longest journey by taxi wasn’t nearly as long, but is definitely worthy of note. Jeremy Levine, Mark Aylett, and Carlos Arrese travelled from London to Cape Town, South Africa, and back, from June 3 to October 17, 1994. Their taxi drive was 34,908 km and they racked up a fare of £40,210 – which, believe it or not, was waived! Now, it’s fair to say both groups probably came across a traffic jam or two, but it probably didn’t compare to the longest-ever traffic jam which stretched 176 km from Lyon towards Paris, France, on February 16, 1980. And finally, if you’re faced with a tight parking situation be sure to keep Russ Swift of County Durham, England in mind. He earned the record for tightest parallel parking in 1999 when he parked his vehicle in a space that was only 33 cm longer than the car. More fun facts available at Guinness World Records.
